Short Description

Most conventional postcards depict landscapes or architectures and our act of posting them is an attempt to share remotely portions of such spaces thought the photographic medium.

“Greetings from a wall” aims to investigate the implications of such attempt.

The installation questions the partialisation of space required by the impossibility to picture the latter in its entirety. Every view or detail framed in a postcard would inevitably carry in itself the denial of all other views and details discarded because left out of the frame. Postcards are fragments of space that allow us to reconstitute remotely its entirety in our minds.

Sharing space through a photo has to also, unavoidably, take into consideration the notion of faithfulness between real and replica. Alberto's postcards depict reality in its real scale, a way to share a place by its dimensionality and conveying through an image the materiality of space as a measurable matter.

In “Greetings form a wall” this search for a faithful replica resolutes in an overlap between reality and its representation, where the artwork almost vanishes in space.

Whilst conventional postcards aim to voice the most unequivocal meaning and recognisable aesthetic, Alberto's postcards depict what at first glance seems to be insignificant details and the aesthetic of which lies at most on the quality of camouflaging within some a reality otherwise unnoticed. The meaning, in fact, does not lie in the singularity of the postcard, but in the relation that elapses between their totality and space. On the other hand, the postcards taken in isolation, far from their original spatial coordinates seem to acquire a new aesthetic, no more as faithful camouflages, but rather as abstract textures of colours and matter.
