About the book:

Democracy is in jeopardy. The rise of authoritarian populism, the polarisation of politics and the attacks on the foundations of liberal representative democracy leave little doubt about it.

Through this fully illustrated book by Favaro, the concept of protection and care is shifted from the personal to the deeply social and political realm.

Written in 2021 as a warning against the rise of authoritarian populism and political polarization, the book now reads as a prophetic reflection on our current condition. Many of the illustrations, once considered dystopian or paradoxical, have become tangible realities—nightmares of our daily lives.

Comprising 14 chapters authored by prominent academics and political analysts, The Crisis And Future Of Democracy tackles urgent challenges threatening democracy’s future. It exposes the vulnerabilities of liberal representative democracy in Europe and beyond, addressing issues often overlooked in mainstream discourse.

The volume advocates for a radical democratization process through bottom-up political and social restructuring, urging active engagement to safeguard democratic values in an era of growing authoritarianism

In 14 chapters, this book tackles a wide range of problems surrounding democracy and how it might evolve, often drawing the reader’s attention to less-discussed matters. The authors, with their diverse country and disciplinary backgrounds, bring together a wealth of knowledge, astute insights and forward-looking conclusions about the state of democracy, the potential for democratic change and the actors and strategies that can get us there. We hope it will inspire political action striving for a democratisation of democracy.
